Draw

Our neighbourhoods are full of exciting and special places. Where did you first ride your bike? Where do you hang out after school? Does anyone special live near you? Did anything exciting happen in the history of your neighbourhood? This is a fun way to document it. You’ll be surprised by how cool your neighbourhood really is!

What you need:

· A large piece of cardboard

· Paper

· Colour pencils, paint, pens, glitter and any other objects you’d like to use to decorate your neighbourhood.

· Glue or sticky tape

What to do:

1. Draw a map of your neighbourhood on a large piece of cardboard. Try to include all the shops, parks and houses of your family and friends.

2. On separate pieces of paper (you can use one piece of paper and cut it up) write a couple of sentences about each of your special places, it could be:

a. Why the place is special to you

b. Something that happened there

c. A fact about the place

d. A short description of who lives there

e. Or what the place looks and smells like.

3. The pieces of paper will need to be slightly bigger than the drawing of the place you are writing about.

4. Use scissors – ask your parent or guardian’s permission first – and cut around the edges of each place you have written a story for. Make sure you leave one edge attached, so that you can make a trap door.

5. Stick your pieces of writing behind the cut out hole, so that when you open the roof, front of the building or lift up the park you can read your note.

Write

So you know there are all different types of writing, but did you know there are over 40 different types of poems? Why not check out ‘Bunyip Creek’ and write a Narrative Poem (a poem that tells a story) to accompany it? Or if you feel like a challenge, write a different type of poem for each picture – they don’t have to be long, why not try a limerick or a haiku?

For a list of types of poems check out this site.

Keep those creative juices flowing and contribute to ‘What happens next?’.

Make

Have you ever made a worm farm? They are great fun to make and fantastic for the environment. Check out this website for instructions. Ask an adult for help, but be warned you will get dirty!
